VLS was one of the first institutions in Vietnam to recognize the importance of training teachers in Vietnamese as a Foreign Language (VFL) teaching methodology. In the past decade, VLS has organized six intensive pedagogical teacher training seminars in VFL theory and practice. Many of the best graduates of our training courses have since been hired to teach full-time at VLS, while others have gone on to become distinguished teachers of Vietnamese at various institutions throughout Vietnam.

In accordance with our goal of continually raising the bar on teaching standards, VLS organizes regular monthly training workshops for our teaching staff. These workshops are designed to provide opportunities for teachers to share their individual areas of expertise with one another, learn new teaching skills and methods, focus on the development and implementation of new curriculums and course materials, and evaluate existing courses. Recent workshop topics include: Successful Syllabus Preparation, How to Design and Implement Practicum and Field-Trip Classes, Information-Gap Speaking Exercises, The Communicative Approach, Pre-Reading Activities, Teaching Regional Dialects and Vietnamese Address Patterns, and Vietnamese Cultural Topics in the Language Classroom.

VLS places particular emphasis on the ongoing monitoring of our teaching team and we regularly schedule observation sessions to sit in on our faculty's classes. Because our students' opinions and suggestions are very important to us, we also periodically ask students to fill out performance evaluations on their courses and instructors. We pride ourselves on the time and care that we put into ensuring that our students receive the best-quality instruction possible.

 

VĂN HOÁ TRONG GIẢNG DẠY TIẾNG VIỆT
CHO NGƯỜI NƯỚC NGOÀI

Sáng ngày 25/3, trường Tiếng Việt Sài Gòn (VLS) đã tổ chức buổi nói chuyện với Giáo sư – Tiến sĩ Phạm Đức Dương, nguyên Viện trưởng Viện nghiên cứu Đông Nam Á, Chủ tịch Hội Khoa học Đông Nam Á Việt Nam, về đề tài giảng văn hóa Việt Nam trong giảng dạy tiếng Việt cho người nước ngoài. Ông là một nhà nghiên cứu ngôn ngữ học, nghiên cứu Đông Nam Á học nổi tiếng, đồng thời là người lãnh đạo, tổ chức xây dựng và phát triển ngành Đông Nam Á học ở Việt Nam.

 

Qua ba tiếng trao đổi, chia sẻ với giáo viên của trường, giáo sư đã gợi mở và hướng dẫn thêm nhiều kiến thức mới về văn hóa và lịch sử Việt Nam như thời kỳ tiền nhà nước (pre-etat); tiền thân của Đông Nam Á; tại sao trong tiếng Việt có từ Bụt và Phật để chỉ “Buddha”, Bụt và Phật có khác nhau không?; những yếu tố nào giúp nhà Trần phát triển bền vững?; …  Kiến thức mới đem lại cho giáo viên VLS một cách nhìn, cách tiếp cận mới để giảng dạy tiếng Việt và văn hóa cho người nước ngoài một cách hiệu quả. Với VLS, việc giảng dạy tiếng Việt không đơn thuần là truyền thụ ngôn ngữ mà còn là cách truyền hiểu biết và cảm hứng về văn hoá Việt cho người nước ngoài, để họ không chỉ biết nói tiếng Việt mà còn hiểu, đồng cảm với tâm hồn và tinh hoa văn hoá dân tộc Việt Nam.

 
Việt Nam đang hội nhập với toàn thế giới. Và thế giới ngày nay không đơn thuần là hình cầu mà là một mặt phẳng. Biên định giữa các ngôn ngữ, văn hoá, quốc gia rất gần. Do vậy, phải làm cho người nước ngoài hiểu cơ tầng – giá trị văn hoá Việt là riêng và văn hóa dân tộc Việt trở nên khu biệt. Đó cũng là một trong những yêu cầu mà đội ngũ sư phạm VLS đã, đang thực hiện và truyền thụ cho các học trò của mình.
